About Speed Humps:
Speeding on residential streets is a common complaint of concerned citizens. Although enforcement of speed limits by police departments is an effective means of reducing speeds, limited resources do not allow such enforcement on a regular and permanent basis. Research has shown that speed humps are an effective approach to slowing down traffic on residential streets.
Speed humps are most frequently used in residential areas with mid-block placement rather than an intersection. Speed humps are ideal for neighborhood traffic calming (municipalities), school zones, parking lots, hospitals, shopping malls, apartment complexes, and any area accessed by emergency vehicles. Studies have also shown that signs are not enough to encourage traffic calming. While some drivers do reduce their speed upon reading a warning sign, most drivers will immediately slow down upon seeing a speed hump. Best used on a level area, they are not recommended on grades steeper than 8%. Speed humps work well with curb extensions.
The all-new Safety Rider speed humps are unique modular traffic calming devices designed to safely slow traffic while maintaining continuous traffic flow. Embedded bright reflective tape on the speed humps alert drivers well in advance. Safety Rider speed humps are sold in modular units (35.5”x19.5”x2.1”) with a tongue-n’-groove system, allowing any length of speed hump to be created. End Caps are also available to give a smooth finish to the edges of the speed humps. Q: Do I need a city permit to install a speed bump in a residential area?
A: Every city, town, and municipality has different regulations. If outside the city limits, check with the county. If the neighborhood is governed by a home owners association, you will need to get approval from their Board to install the speed bump. In most cases, speed bumps create safer roads, and are approved without a problem.
Q: What's the difference between a speed bump and a speed hump?
A: A speed hump is wider than a speed bump and slows the traffic to 10-16 mph. A speed bump has a steeper grade that requires vehicles to slow to 2-5 mph.
Q: Can speed bumps be installed on concrete?
A: Speed bumps can be installed on concrete, asphalt, or any paved surface. There are different fasteners and installation methods depending on the surface.
Q: What is the difference between the recycled plastic and recycled rubber curbs/speed bumps?
A: The difference is mainly the material that they are made from. The plastic curbs bumps are 100% recycled high density polyethylene. The rubber curbs and bumps are made from 100% recycled rubber.
